Hello,
My wife and I are two Christians who have been hurt by the church. I have been hurt because of my marriage equality stand and my wife has been hurt through unkindness and lack of support for her mental health and her mother’s death. It’s a long story!
I would like to know you stance on welcoming all , as Jesus did. Because we have felt we are calling out in the wilderness.
Anyway we hope to hear from you.
Hi Christopher,
The Uniting Church accepts LGBTIQ+ members, and accepts them in leadership through the usual Discernment processes used for all members. The Uniting Church allows Same-sex marriages in their churches since July 2018, with individual ministers having freedom of conscience to perform a same -sex marriage as a celebrant, and individual Church Councils having their right to decide whether such a wedding can take place in their church building. So far, St Andrew’s Berwick Uniting Church and I (Rev Wendy) have not been requested to perform a same-sex marriage. However we do have a married same-sex couple in our church and they are included in our W@9 Sunday 9am worship leading roster. I would be open to a conversation about a same-sex marriage, if there was such a request, as I would any marriage request in various locations, on a case by case basis. The Church Council has not made a decision about the use of its buildings yet. I hope this answers your questions, and you feel welcome to come to St Andrew’s Berwick Uniting Church. Blessings, Wendy.
